I have been brown to blond and vice versa for the past two years. Needless to say, this has left me with less than perfect hair that is beautiful in terms of color and style; yet very very tired when it comes to texture and resistance.
Colored hair is definitely a trend, but going blonde then back to brunette repetitively takes a heavy toll on your hair. Mine was left weak, brittle, dry and breaking. I had to do a lot of research on how to repair severely damaged hair to save my hair. And after I figured out what works and what doesn’t, I am putting up this post to help all of you planning to change your hair color, keeping it as healthy as possible afterwards.

While turning blonde, ask your hairdresser to cut your weak and breaking hair tips anyway. These parts will break eventually after being bleached and will fall off of themselves; so you’d better come out with an even cut.
- Perform your first oil treatment right after your hair processing. Your hair has just been severely weaken and you need not lose a minute before starting to help it regain some strength and moisture.
- Use a moisturizing hair mask whenever you step into the shower; preferably up to three to four times a week. Your dryer hair will regain some moisture and become easier to comb through and will break less.
- Use an overnight protein mask. Proteins are very important for damaged hair for they fill in the holes and rebuild the hair strand by strand. Do this once per week.
- Use your free time at home to use some essential oils treatments (serums or masks) on your hair for as long as possible.
- Use moisturizing sprays and serums to make your hair look glossier, and moisturize it at the same time.
- Avoid the heat as much as possible. My formula is to use a leave-in conditioner, skip the hairdryer, let my hair air dry then straighten it with an iron as fast as possible.
- Cut back on your salon visits unless you are going to give yourself a repair treatment.
- Avoid staying for long hours in chlorine water or salty water; always make sure your rinse your hair afterwards, and before sun exposure.
Your hair should be better within one month of these treatments. Always remember that bleached/colored hair will never be as healthy as untouched hair; but it can regain a lot of its previous strength and shine with persistent care.
